Custom embroidery patches, made to your shape

Custom embroidery patches are embroidered designs stitched on a twill base and finished with your choice of backing. Most suppliers sell them from a fixed list of shapes. Super Label Store builds the patch around your artwork instead: any outline, anywhere from 1.5 to 9 inches, on a twill base with polyester embroidery threads.

Super Label Store produces custom embroidery patches from 10 pieces for $97. Choose your coverage, your backing and your border, upload your design, and we email you a digital proof. Nothing goes to the machines until you approve it.

Choosing your size

Super Label Store produces custom embroidery patches from 1.5 to 9 inches. Size drives both the look and the price, so it is worth deciding before you design. Larger patches carry more detail, but they also carry more stitches, which costs more and takes longer.

Placement Typical size Notes
Cap front or side 2 to 2.5 in The curve of the panel limits how much detail reads
Chest logo 2.5 to 3.5 in The most common order. Keep the design simple at this size
Sleeve or shoulder 3 to 4 in Standard for uniform and unit insignia
Bag, tote or accessory 3 to 5 in Flat surface, so almost any shape works
Jacket back panel 6 to 9 in Where intricate artwork and full coverage pay off

Coverage: 50%, 75% or 100%

Coverage on custom embroidery patches is how much of the patch surface is covered by embroidery thread rather than left as visible twill. It changes the appearance, the stitch count, the production time and the price.

Coverage What it looks like Best for Price
50% About half embroidered, with plenty of twill background showing Simple logos, text and bold shapes. A lighter, traditional embroidered look Lowest
75% Mostly embroidered, with some background fabric still visible A richer, more premium finish that keeps some twill texture Mid-range
100% Entire surface stitched, no twill visible Intricate artwork and the fullest, densest, highest-end appearance Highest

Higher coverage means a higher stitch count, which means more thread and more machine time. That is the whole reason for the price difference, and it is also why a 100% coverage custom patch takes longer to produce than a 50% custom embroidery patch.

A simple rule: pick 50% for the most economical option and a classic look, 75% when you want a premium finish without paying for full embroidery, and 100% when maximum visual impact is the point.

Backings

  • Sew-on. The most durable option and the standard for anything that will be washed repeatedly or worn hard.
  • Iron-on. Heat-activated backing, applied with a household iron. Convenient, but not for dry-clean-only garments or heavily textured fabric.
  • 3M adhesive. Peel and stick. Best for hard surfaces, cases and short-term applications rather than garments.
  • Single velcro (hook or loop). Pairs with a panel already fitted to the garment or gear.
  • Double velcro. Hook and loop supplied together, so you can attach it to anything.
  • Plastic backing. Stiffens the patch so it holds its shape rather than following the fabric.
  • Keychain. Turns the patch into a standalone product for merchandise and giveaways.

Backing is chosen per order, so the same custom embroidery patches can ship sew-on for one customer and velcro for another. Velcro is the usual choice for tactical and uniform work, where patches need to be swapped rather than committed to. Sew-on remains the right answer for fashion and anything with a long service life.

Merrow Border or Heat Cut

Super Label Store offers two edge finishes on custom embroidery patches, and the choice follows from the shape of your artwork.

A Merrow Border is the classic embroidered edge, overlocked around the perimeter. It seals the edge completely and suits simple outlines: circles, ovals, rectangles and shields.

The Merrow Border is around 5 mm wide, and that width is added around your design. On a small patch it takes up a meaningful share of the surface, so factor it in before you settle on a size. If your artwork already fills the patch, either go a size up or choose Heat Cut.

Heat Cut is a clean, sharp finish that follows the exact outline of your artwork. It handles complex and irregular shapes that an overlock machine cannot follow, and it gives the most premium appearance.

In short: simple shape, Merrow Border. Complex shape or a design that fills the patch, Heat Cut.

You choose the border colour yourself in the design tool, alongside the background colour of the patch.

What embroidery can and cannot reproduce

Thread is not ink. The most common reason an embroidered patch proof comes back needing changes is artwork that was designed for print. Before you upload:

  • Text needs 3.5 to 4 mm of width minimum. Below that, letters fill in and become unreadable. This is roughly twice what a woven label needs, because embroidery stitches are much thicker.
  • Gradients and shadows do not exist in thread. They will be reduced to solid color blocks. Design in flat colors from the start.
  • Photographs cannot be embroidered. They have to be redrawn as a simplified illustration.
  • Very fine lines disappear. Hairlines and thin outlines either vanish or thicken into blobs.
  • Serif and thin fonts perform badly. Bold sans-serif reads best at patch scale.
  • Small detail wants a bigger patch. If your design will not simplify, the answer is usually a larger size rather than finer stitching.

The digital proof exists to catch all of this before anything is stitched, which is why we do not start production until you approve it.

Embroidered or woven patches?

Custom embroidery patches use thick thread laid on top of a twill base, giving a raised, textured, tactile finish. It is the right choice when you want presence and a classic patch feel.

Woven patches use much finer threads worked into a flat surface, which holds far more detail in a smaller area and produces a thinner, smoother patch. Choose woven when your design has small lettering, fine linework or many colors in a tight space.

If your artwork is essentially a logo with text, and the patch is under 2.5 inches, woven will usually reproduce it better than embroidery will.

How the proof and production timing works

This is the part worth reading before you order, because patch timing works differently from our other products.

  1. You place your order and upload your artwork.
  2. We send a digital proof by email within 1 to 2 business days, showing colors and design specifications. You approve it or request changes through the portal linked in that email.
  3. Production starts after you approve the proof, not when you place the order. Color selection and machine setup happen at this point.
  4. Standard production is 8 to 12 business days from approval, plus shipping. Rush is 4 to 8 business days for $85 per design, available from 200 pieces.
  5. Your confirmed ship date appears in your account once everything is approved.

If you are working to a deadline, build in the proof stage. A day spent approving artwork is a day production has not started.

Custom patches with a low minimum

Ten pieces is a real order, not a sample allowance. Most patch suppliers start at 50 or 100, which forces a small brand, a club or a single team to buy four times what they need and store the rest.

Our minimum applies per design, so ten custom patches of one artwork is a complete order. If you need three different designs, that is three orders of ten. Pricing scales from there with no ceiling, so the same page serves a ten-piece test run and a ten-thousand-piece production order.

Who orders custom embroidery patches

  • Fashion and streetwear brands adding embroidered patches to jackets, caps, denim and bags
  • Military, tactical and law enforcement units where velcro backing and durability matter more than anything else
  • Fire, rescue and emergency services needing consistent unit insignia across a roster
  • Sports teams and clubs ordering custom patches in small runs for a squad rather than a season's stock
  • Schools and universities producing embroidered badges, mascots and achievement patches
  • Corporate and workwear programs standardising branded uniform patches
  • Makers, crafters and events ordering personalized patches where 10 pieces is the whole order and that is fine

Uploading your artwork: use a PNG with a transparent background

If you want your patch cut to the shape of your design rather than a rectangle, upload a PNG with a transparent background. That is the single most useful thing you can do before ordering.

A transparent PNG lets the patch follow the true contours of your artwork. A file with a white or coloured background is usually interpreted as a square or rectangle, because the background reads as part of the design. You can also select Custom Shape during ordering if your file is not transparent.

Other formats work too. JPG, PNG, AI, PSD, INDD and PDF are all accepted, and our design team reviews every file before it goes to the machines.

Choosing colours: leave your Pantone codes

If exact brand colours matter, enter your Pantone or other colour codes in the comments field when you order. Without codes, the Super Label Store design team matches your artwork as closely as the thread range allows, and shows you the result on the proof.

Metallic gold and silver are available as a premium option at a surcharge. Because they are applied selectively rather than across the whole patch, note in the comments field exactly where you want them used.

You also choose the background colour of the patch and the colour of the border yourself in the design tool.

The two proofs, and which one you need

Super Label Store provides two different checks before production, and they do different jobs.

Digital Proof: check the size

Available immediately, underneath the order button. Download it, print it on A4, cut the patch out and lay it on the garment or product it is destined for. That is the fastest way to find out whether 3 inches is the right call before you commit to a run.

If your printer's scaling is slightly off, adjust the print percentage until the printed size matches the dimensions shown.

Photo Proof: check the result

The Photo Proof is free on embroidery patches and can be ticked during ordering at no extra cost. We produce a single sample patch, photograph it, and send it to you. You then approve it or send feedback before the rest of the production run starts.

Strongly recommended on larger quantities and on designs that matter. Seeing one finished patch before another 500 are stitched is worth the wait.

Note that the Photo Proof does extend the lead time, because production pauses until you respond. Keep an eye on your email during that window, particularly on a rush order.

Approve on the website, not by email

When you click Approve on the approval page, the approval goes straight to the production floor and the machines carry on immediately.

Feedback sent by email has to be processed by a member of staff first, which adds a step and delays your order. Wherever you can, use the approval page for both approvals and changes.

Quantities and pricing

Custom embroidery patches at Super Label Store start at 10 pieces per design, at $97. The unit price drops automatically as the quantity rises, so a larger run costs meaningfully less per patch.

From 100 pieces you can enter your own quantity rather than picking a preset, in increments of 10. So 110, 120, 170 and 250 are all valid. Useful when you are ordering to a roster or a production run rather than to a round number.

Design your custom embroidered patches

Set your shape, size, coverage, backing and border in our online patch maker, upload your artwork, and we will send your free digital proof within two business days. From 10 custom embroidery patches for $97.

FAQ

What is the minimum order for custom embroidery patches?

The minimum order for patches at Super Label Store is 10 pieces. That is a real minimum, not a sample allowance. Each separate design carries its own minimum of 10, so a set of four different patches means four orders of at least 10 each. Bulk orders scale up from there with no ceiling.

Do you offer custom patches with no minimum order?

We do not sell single pieces, but our minimum is 10, which is among the lowest in the industry and low enough for a test run, a small club or a single team. The minimum applies per design rather than per order.

How much do custom patches cost?

Custom embroidery patches at Super Label Store start at $97 for 10 patches. Price is driven by size, quantity, coverage and color count, so the design tool updates the figure as you change those options. Larger and denser patches cost more because they take more thread and more machine time.

What sizes can I order for custom embroidery patches?

Super Label Store produces patches from 1.5 to 9 inches, in any shape. Most chest logos land between 2.5 and 3.5 inches, sleeve insignia between 3 and 4 inches, and jacket back panels between 6 and 9 inches.

How many colors can I use?

Super Label Store includes up to 9 thread colors in the price. Designs using up to 15 colors are possible for a surcharge. Neon and metallic lurex threads are available if you want the design to stand out further.

What does 50%, 75% and 100% coverage mean?

It is how much of the patch is covered in embroidery rather than left as visible twill fabric. 50% shows plenty of background and costs least, 75% is mostly stitched, and 100% covers the entire surface for the densest, most premium finish at the highest price.

What backing should I choose?

Sew-on for maximum durability and anything washed often. Iron-on for convenience on smooth fabrics. Velcro for tactical gear and uniforms where patches get swapped. Adhesive, plastic and keychain backings are available for non-garment uses.

What is the difference between a merrowed and a laser-cut border?

Merrowed is a thick overlocked edge stitched around the perimeter, the classic patch look, suited to simple outlines. Laser cut follows your exact artwork outline with a thin sealed edge, which is what makes intricate and irregular shapes possible.

How small can text be on a patch?

Around 3.5 to 4 mm wide as an absolute minimum. Below that, embroidery stitches fill in the letterforms and the text becomes unreadable. If your text will not fit at that size, either simplify it or order a larger patch.

Can you embroider a photograph or a gradient?

No. Embroidery uses solid thread colors, so photographs must be redrawn as simplified illustrations and gradients or shadows are reduced to flat blocks of color. We will flag this on your proof before anything is produced.

Are embroidered patches washable?

Yes. Polyester embroidery thread on a twill base is colorfast and holds up to regular wear and washing. Sew-on backing survives washing best. Iron-on adhesive can weaken over many hot cycles, so sew the edges if the garment is washed often.

How long does production take?

Standard production at Super Label Store is 8 to 12 business days plus shipping, counted from your approval of the digital proof rather than from your order date. Rush production is 4 to 8 business days for $85 per design, available on orders from 200 pieces.

Can I see my patch before it is made?

Yes. Super Label Store emails a free digital proof within 1 to 2 business days of your order, showing colors and specifications. Nothing is stitched until you approve it, and you can request changes through the portal linked in that email.

What file should I upload for a custom shape?

A PNG with a transparent background. That lets the patch follow the true outline of your artwork. A file with a white or coloured background is usually read as a square or rectangle. You can also select Custom Shape during ordering.

Is the Photo Proof free?

On embroidery patches, yes. Tick it during ordering at no extra cost and we will photograph a single sample patch for your approval before the rest of the run starts. On woven labels the Photo Proof is a paid option, because a sample has to be produced and photographed before production continues.

What is the difference between the Digital Proof and the Photo Proof?

The Digital Proof is a file you download under the order button and print at actual size to check dimensions. The Photo Proof is a photograph of a real sample patch, so you see the finished result in thread before the full run is produced.

Can I order a quantity that is not one of the presets?

Yes, from 100 pieces upward, in increments of 10. Quantities like 110, 170 or 250 are all possible. Below 100 the standard order steps apply.

What if I do not have a print-ready design?

Send us your idea and our team will turn it into a digital patch design for you at no cost. This is the normal route for most customers, not an exception, so a rough sketch or a logo file is enough to start.
